Public Works Staff
The Public Works Department is staffed by 5 full time employees and one part time summer employee, with a cumulative total of service to the City of over 60 years. The staff is responsible for building inspection of both residential and commercial buildings, preventative maintenance of the public utility vehicles and equipment, park maintenance and weed control, and minor street maintenance, as well as the repair of water and sewer lines.
They also maintain and operate the City ground water wells and booster pump station, and also install and read water meters. They maintain and operate the Waste Water Treatment Plant and 12 sewer pump stations (including 3 in the City of Nooksack). The annual operating budget of the Department is approximately $2.4 million per year. Operating funds are derived from a number of sources including real estate taxes from domestic homes, construction permit fees, water/sewer connection fees, monthly utility charges and a portion of the general fund revenue.
The responsibilities of the Public Works Department are distributed among five sub-departments: Building Inspection, Parks, Streets, Water, and Sewer. Public Works provides support for the planning, design, and construction of public infrastructure. Contracted engineering services are provided by Mr. Marc Curtis P.E., Wilson Engineering, LLC, and contracted planning services are provided by Mr. Rollin Harper, Sehome Planning & Development Services.
